Inscriptions of Quran on the arches and doors add to its religious value. The mosque built in “Qutub Shahi” style of architecture resembles the Golkonda fort and Charminar with respect to its arches. The foundation of this mosque was laid in the year 1614 by Quli Qutb Shah, it was further constructed by Aurangzeb and completed in the year 1687. Even though it was originally named as” Baitul Atiq” few bricks brought from Mecca and used in its construction made it popular as “Mecca Masjid”. A french traveler who visited this place during its construction has described the great efforts taken for the construction of this extensive structure and enormous number of man power engaged for constructing this place of worship. There are tombs enveloping marble graves of Asaf Jahi rulers as well as tombs of Nizam’s family at the entrance of the mosque.
